Rob soaks up knowledge any way he can get it. Which is a better method, though? Youtube Learning vs. Live Events – Youtube learning is convenient, but it’s easy to get distracted by “brain candy”. Sometimes you need the distraction, but it’s not always ideal. There’s something special about learning at conferences and live events.

Our friend David followed up on a point Rob made earlier in the call about how easily we can waste our time scrolling social media. Before we know it, a half hour has gone by and we haven’t learned anything. Rob talked about unplugging every other day from online content. While the time spent decompressing with silly videos (“brain candy”) online is okay, it’s important that we prioritize time to learn. This includes Youtube learning.

Rob continued this thought, pointing out that we can’t live healthy lives just consuming candy. Our bodies need protein, carbohydrates, and fat to run properly. In much the same way, our minds need to consume more “nutritious” content in order to continue growing. Without healthy content for personal development, the brain candy will overtake our minds.

To contrast the Youtube learning method, Rob then espoused the merits of live events. When Rob attends conferences, he is energized by the other attendees. Everyone is at the event for the same purpose, and that encourages him to soak in the knowledge. Also, he mentioned the “barrier of entry” to these events. Events with free admission may not attract folks for the right reasons. When people pay their hard earned money to attend a live event, they are serious about learning all they can. Rob encouraged us that sometimes splurging for the VIP ticket to meet the guest of honor or receive other perks is often a good investment for your education dollars. Those experiences can be unique opportunities you may never get again.

In this clip, Rob Rowsell talks about his former rehab roommate Jake Garcia’s real estate journey. Like Rob, Jake is also a former drug addict. Years after achieving sobriety, Jake reached out to Rob for advice, in order to advance his new career. Today, Jake and Nicki own over 60 rental homes in the state of Arizona. They are a true real estate success story.

When Rob Rowsell first befriended Jake Garcia, they were both recovering drug addicts. They roomed together on their road to wellness. As Rob documented in his book Addicted To Life, he was done with life on the streets, in an endless cycle of addiction to heroin and crack cocaine. Once each of these friends overcame their vices, they went their separate ways, but kept in touch. Rob’s fortunes grew as he advanced in the auto repair ownership field. Later, he sold his automotive shop businesses in order to concentrate full time on real estate. Jake took notice, and phoned his old roommate for tips on getting into property investing himself.

With Rob’s guidance, Jake and his wife Nicki dove into the real estate field. Before too long, the Garcias had become a real estate success story, investing in dozens of rental homes, 60 of which are in Arizona. To this day, Jake and Rob are good friends, and Jake attends our ATL Inner Circle Community meetings. These two share vast property investment knowledge with other ATL members every month.

Our friend Hitomi starts off the discussion relaying her experience with work life balance stress. Maintaining her personal growth has been a challenge as she grows her business. Her success has come at a cost to her health and relationships with family and friends. Therefore, she has taken action intentionally the past five years. She advises all of the other callers to prioritize their own health.

Rob responds, admitting that while his real estate business was growing, he was living out of balance himself. Working extra hours resulted in weight gain from neglecting nutrition and exercise. He straightened his priorities before the damage was irreparable, but it cost him in his own personal relationships.

Right or wrong, building a business from the ground up requires sacrifices, and the damage is almost unavoidable. This is because most business owners go into their endeavors without knowing how much work it will take to succeed. Once you realize what your new lifestyle entails, you scramble to juggle every aspect involved. Rob soon realized the importance of hiring staff to perform certain tasks so he could concentrate on what only he could do.

Nick concurred with these statements. He is starting his second business, and learning from the challenges of his first. Spending time with his wife and young daughter are his top priorities. Rob has seen his dedication firsthand.

The Psychology Of Money by Morgan Housel is first on Rob’s recommended reading list. He promises that reading this book will change your outlook on both investing and wealth. Buy Back Your Time by Dan Martell may not be a comprehensive guide, but it will help you understand how much you should value your time. Remember, time is the one commodity you can not get more of! The Richest Man Who Ever Lived by Steven K. Scott has helped Rob apply Godly wisdom from the Book of Proverbs to his life. Remember, God gave Solomon a choice between wealth and wisdom. Solomon chose the gift of wisdom, so God blessed him with enormous riches as well. After all, a fool and his money are soon parted.

Finally, Rob highlights The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey.  He constantly references this book in our community meetings, with good cause. This book is a game changer, teaching how to center our business and personal lives around principals. You don’t have to read it all the way through again to learn from it. Flip to a chapter that applies to your current needs for a quick refresher course.

Although Rob listens to audiobooks on the go, he stresses that physical books are better for learning. He practices repeating and highlighting passages that jump out at him. When you have a book in front of you, rather than Airpods in your ears, chances are that you are focused in. There’s less of a chance that you’ll be distracted by something you see while reading.

First, Rob pulls up the spreadsheet. He then breaks down each section for the callers, since it may overwhelm the untrained eye. Sections in the form track assets, income, and expenses from last period and this period. The Income section is divided into Active Income, Passive Income, and Passive Residual Income (PRI). Net Worth from Passive Income generally includes capital gains from passive investments. PRI includes such numbers as rents, royalties, and interest.

Rob then punched in a few sample numbers to show how they interact with each other. The Financial Freedom Formula automatically crunches the numbers and tracks where the sample user is in their journey to their ultimate goal.
